The theory of knowledge essay has a maximum of 1,600 words. You answer one of six prescribed titles that the IB publishes for each examination session, and you must answer the title exactly as it is set — do not reword it.

The TOK guide and the prescribed-titles document for your session set out exactly what is included in the word count; check them, and your school's TOK coordinator, before you finalise your essay.

Planning 1,600 words

1,600 words goes quickly once you have claims, counterclaims and real-life examples for the areas of knowledge your title asks about. A common shape is an introduction of 150–200 words, two developed sections of about 600 words each and a conclusion of 150–200 words. Try it in the essay planner.
