How to plan a 250-word essay
At 250 words there is room for one clear point, one or two pieces of support and a closing line. Cut the introduction to a single sentence that answers the question directly.
A starting word budget (about 10% / 80% / 10%). Adjust it to your argument.
About 1 pages double-spaced or 0.5 pages single-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins (roughly 250 and 500 words per page). Headings, block quotes, many short paragraphs and a reference list all add pages.
About 1 min 3 sec to read silently at an average adult pace of 238 words per minute, and about 1 min 55 sec to read aloud at 130 words per minute.
Usually an introduction, 1–2 body paragraphs and a conclusion, if body paragraphs run between 120 and 200 words. There is no fixed rule — follow the logic of your argument rather than a paragraph count.
It depends on your brief. Many institutions allow a margin such as 10% (for 250 words that would be 225–275), while others treat 250 as a strict maximum and some stop marking at the limit. If the brief does not say, ask your teacher or lecturer.
Usually the reference list or bibliography does not count, but in-text citations often do. Footnotes, tables, appendices and headings vary by institution, so check your assignment brief.
